Chapter Twelve

We’re doing only two scenes for Candy’s Wish, the ones with Emily and Mandy, which gives the rest of us time to practice our lines.

Twig, the gangly kid, who plays one of the bullies, slides into the seat next to me. “So, how do you feel about your part? I feel like Ms. Jones totally miscast me. I mean, come on. Me? A bully?”

I swivel my head toward him. “What’s your name?”

He looks confused for a second, like I should know. Or care. “I’m Dwight.”

What kind of parents humiliated their kid with a name like that? Feeling a little sorry for him, I say, “Well, I think you are doing a good job as a bully. I’m definitely happy with my part as one of the town children.” Or any role that lets me get closer to Mandy.

Dwight smiles like I made his world complete.

I open my script and flip to my favorite scene with Mandy, where I get to talk to her several times. The dialogue flows smoothly and naturally, exactly as I know it will when we become real friends in real life.

We’ve already been through so much, but once everything is right, we’ll be able to share moments together.

Justine and Tabitha sit a few chairs away. Hannah isn’t here. A tiny smile colors my soul.

Dwight looks over at me and smiles. “What’s funny?”

I blink at him. What the heck is he talking about?

He gestures to my script. “It’s that one scene, huh? At the mall?”

“Uh, yeah.” I bob my head up and down for his amusement. He actually laughs.

I set down the script and stand to stretch. If I have to endure this guy’s presence for another second, I’ll burst.

Tabitha and Justine are feeding each other their lines. Pretending to be thirsty, I head over to the concessions table and snag a can of soda. I take a few sips so I can glean any vital information to help me execute the next part of the plan.

“I have so much to practice,” Tabitha whines, pushing the glasses to the top of her nose. “I’ll never get these down.”

“Why don’t we head to my house after school and go over our scenes together? I could use some help with memorizing some lines myself.”

I chuck down the rest and nearly choke. I know exactly what I must do. Tabitha smacks on a big piece of bubble gum. Like a flippin cow. She’ll be chewing on cud soon. I snicker.

Tabitha sighs with relief. “Glad I’m not the only one. Thanks, Justine.”

Gasping over a coughing fit, I practically lose my balance when the girls turn to look in my direction.

“Are you okay?” Justine asks in her mousy voice. As if she cares. I want to wring her neck right now.

Instead, I nod and wander to the back of the room where I deposit the empty can in a recycle bin.

I stare at the blank white wall. I can see it all play out. Each second flashes before me in a shuttered scene, like frames of a cartoon drawing coming together.
